Renderman Shader Writer
SPIN is seeking an experienced Renderman Shader Writer / TD for our Toronto VFX studio.
DESCRIPTION
- Design and write RenderMan shaders and DSO’s to create a photorealistic look for film / television series
- Apply procedural shading and scripting techniques
- Develop rendering tools for creatures, environments, props and visual effects
- Write surface, light, displacement and volume shaders
- Use lighting and rendering techniques, including HDRI and Global Illumination
- Work in conjunction with lighting TD’s to ensure shots can be delivered to the very highest standard
- Ability to code in C++ as necessary
- Translate artistic ability into technical applications
- Provide shader support to the lighting team throughout production
- Should have some experience implementing renderman extensions such as custom RSL plugins, procedurals and /or RIF filters.
Requirements
- Proven experience in feature films / television series with expertise in plausible shading and rendering.
- Should be fluent with RSL
- Excellent understanding of techniques and technologies relating to shading, lighting and rendering with supporting demo reel
- Familiarity with Katana is considered an important asset
- Previous experience shading cloth, fur, feathers, water FX (fire, smoke, dust, etc)
- Good understanding of the entire VFX pipeline from shooting to modeling to texturing, animation and lighting and rendering
- Work in conjunction with TDs and creative team to ensure shots can be delivered to the very highest standard

Pipeline Developer
DESCRIPTION
Some solutions may require a few lines of code in an application-specific expression language, while other
solutions may require creating high-availability RPC servers
On occasion, assist in technical direction tasks, such as helping heads of departments to debug technical issues
REQUIREMENTS
- Proficient in python 2.x/3.x and C++
- Proficient with one or more common vendor APIs: maya, katana, houdini, nuke, and renderman
- Strong understanding of production processes for film and television
- Must have a mature approach to software design and implementation
- Must be able to work collaboratively with other developers, in a co-ordinated manner, on the same product.
- A successful candidate will work transparently, not opaquely
- Must be able to communicate eloquently and effectively with non-technical stakeholders
- Experience in one or more rendering shading languages would be beneficial
- Experience implementing web services (Restful services, WSGI servers) or working directly with databases
- (MongoDB, Postgres) would be beneficial
- Experience with PyQt or PySide would be helpful
- A degree in computer science, math or engineering is strongly preferred

Compositor
DESCRIPTION
- Seamlessly integrate the various layers or elements of a live-action shot
- Strong sense of colour, colourspace and attention to detail
- Ability to do any required tracking (both 2D and 3D)
- Blue/green screen extractions
- Strong roto and paint abilities
- Experience using multi-pass CG elements
- Follow production process and develop creative approaches and problem-solving
- Proficient in using 2.5d approaches, projections and using 3D environment within Nuke
- Work in partnership with lighters and other compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 1 year PHOTO REAL feature film experience in live action films
- Expert knowledge of compositing as well as integration of 3D elements into plates
- Experience in all aspects of stereo compositing and various conversion methodologies
- Successful completion of a Visual Effects diploma from a recognized Institution
- Strong artistic skills a must
- A traditional arts background with emphasis on photo-realistic character work and environments would be an asset
- Experience with Maya and Katana is considered an asset

Senior Compositors
DESCRIPTION
- Responsible for creating high quality digital composites and visual effects for feature films and television
- Seamlessly integrate the various layers or elements of a live-action shot
- Strong sense of colour, colourspace and attention to detail
- Ability to do any required tracking (both 2D and 3D)
- Ability to work on the most complex and demanding shots
- Follow production process and develop creative approaches and problem-solving
- Proficient in using 2.5d approaches, projections and using 3D environment within Nuke
- Work closely with Visual Effects Supervisors to composite the numerous elements that complete a visual
- effects shot
- Work in partnership with lighters and other compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest
- standard
- Thorough understanding of compositing multi-channel lighting passes and how each channel contributes to the
- final image
- Mentor junior compositors and ensure best practices are being employed
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 5 years PHOTO REAL feature film experience in live action films
- Mastery of Nuke
- Expert knowledge of compositing as well as integration of 3D elements into plates
- Experience using multi-pass CG elements
- Experience in all aspects of stereo compositing and various conversion methodologies
- Strong artistic skills
- Experience with Maya and Katana is considered an asset
- A traditional arts background with emphasis on photo-realistic character work and environments an asset

Texture Artist / Modeler
DESCRIPTION
- Texture Artists / Modelers work closely with the shading and lighting artists
- With an emphasis on the aesthetics and techniques of photo-realistic effects, the Texture Artist will be
- responsible for creating photo-real texture and relevant maps
- Develop and manage textures for production pipeline
- Manage quality of 3D models and textures for production use in high and low res format
- Work in partnership with Lighters and Compositors to ensure shots are delivered to the very highest standard
- Help establish suitable working techniques for the members of your team and work in conjunction with the production team (producer, VFX Supervisor, CG supervisor) to establish schedules and technical requirements
- Experience lighting and rendering 3D objects an asset
REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum of 3 – 5 years experience working on feature films and/or television series
- Strong artistic skills required
- Experience using Autodesk Maya, Mari, Z-Brush, Mudbox, Photoshop
- Experience with Maya texturing methodologies
- Experienced Photoshop layout/texture artist
- Experienced photo realistic painter/sculptor
- A traditional arts background with emphasis on photo-realistic character work and environments would be an asset
- Working knowledge of multi-pass rendering, lighting, matchmoving and NURBS modeling would be an asset
- A strong understanding of real world materials is essential and must be demonstrated in the work on your reel
