Project Description
PhD candidate interested in physical simulation to join our
Burbank, CA studio. The project-based Technology Summer 2012 Internship
is a 12-week program.
Title: Simulating Snow
The goal of this work is to explore snow accumulation and snow
simulation techniques for animated feature production. Future films will
benefit from the ability to quickly and efficiently predict how a
character or objects will interact with snow. We hope to hybridize
existing particle based-fluid and rigid body systems in a novel way to
handle snow simulation. Work will consist of developing a data
representation for snow, a method for simulating it, and an interface to
make it easy for artists to work with the technique.
Requirements
- PhD candidate who is also interested in physical simulation
- Familiar with computer graphics and numerical methods for physical simulation
- Strong C++ skills
- Houdini and/or Maya experience is a plus, though not required

: INTERN - ART-DIRECTED PARTICLE SYSTEMS
Project Description
a PhD candidate interested in issues of artistic control to join
our project-based Technology Summer 2012 Intern program at our Burbank,
CA studio.
Title: Art-Directed Particles
We would like to explore methods for controlling the dynamics of
Lagrangian particle simulations. This is similar to methods that control
other dynamic phenomena such as fluids, hair, and cloth. We would like
to extend and leverage these approaches. The goal is to enable effects
artists working on animated features to achieve a more stylized look
than a standard physical simulation would provide. At the same time, the
solution should not look over-controlled as if invisible forces were at
play. The candidate will review recent related work, prototype, and
evaluate a potential solution, all while working with artists and other
developers.
Requirements
- PhD candidate who is also interested in issues of artistic control
- Familiar with computer graphics and numerical methods for physical simulation
- Strong C++ skills
- Houdini and/or Maya experience is a plus, though not required
